Kesäkivaa. Retki Haukkavuorelle. Summer fun. A trip to Haukkavuori.

No millon mennään Mami? When are we going Mom?

Tervehdys taas kaikille!

Hello everyone! We are really enjoying summer. Vacation time has truly been appriciated in our household. We've been doing all sorts of things. Mostly doing stuff with Aulis. A little while back we went for a little hike to a nearby place called Haukkavuori (see more info on the bottom of this page). Views were spectacular and Aulis enjoyed running around in the forrest. Aulis got to run free for some parts of the trail, but when we got to the high points we just had to hook him up to his leash. I think he would have fallen down if not attached to his leash, cos he was running around like a cracy little pug. Our little pug seems to have no fear for hights.

Haukkavuori

Haukkavuori Hill

Haukkavuori is a very high, rocky hill by Lake Sarajärvi. It is quite out-of-the-way, but well worth seeing.

Haukkavuori is the highest point in South-Karelia, it rises 80 metres from the surface of Lake Sarajärvi and there is a wonderful view from the top!

Haukkavuori is also a historical landmark. It has been one of the landmarks of those numerous boundary lines that have crossed this country in the course of centuries. There are some signs that can be found cut in the rock at Haukkavuori. They date back to 1721 and were made for the boundary line of the peace of Uusikaupunki.

Haukkavuori is a special area in ecological way. It has a rich diversity of flora and fauna. In the southern slope of this hill you can find for example lily of the valley (Convallaria majalis), spring pea (Lathyrys vernus) and fly honeysuckle (Lonicera xylosteum).

There are also old aspens and birches in the area, and a very threatened species of woodpecker (Dendrocopos leucotos) which needs this kind of environment, has been found nesting there. Also eagle owl and raven have nested in the projections of the rock-face

The view from there is just gorgous! It reminds me a lot of being in the Rocky Mountains in Colorado, which are always breath-taking.
